Royalty Etiquette: How to Meet & Greet William and Kate

John Stillwell/Getty
Prince William of Wales and his bride, Catherine, also known as the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are set to make their debut as a married couple to North America on Thursday, heading first to Canada and then to Southern California. And while the couple views this trip as a working visit, they’ll be promoting Britain through “the prism of their own interests” a palace source says.
Rest assured that protocol standards will likely be more relaxed for Will and Kate than they were when Queen Elizabeth II visited New York City last July. However, if you’re one of the lucky ones to meet the royal couple, you’ll want to put your best foot forward. Keep in mind that William and Kate have immense power and influence and are representatives of one of the oldest and most revered institutions in the world. With that being said, there are still some important protocols to observe if you want to avoid making an egregious gaffe.
To help me compile this list of royalty etiquette tips, I conferred with my friend and fellow etiquette expert across the pond, William Hanson. Read more

Practice Good Pet Etiquette During “Take Your Dog To Work Day”

My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Oliver, hard at work.
Today is Take Your Dog To Work Day and in honor of this special occasion, here are some etiquette tips courtesy of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
When you show up with your dog at the office on Take Your Dog to Work Day, make sure he is prepared to meet several new people and possibly other dogs. He should have lots of practice with polite greetings before the big day so that he knows what your expectations are.
When your dog is greeting new people, have him sit politely until released for greetings. Not everyone in your office will want to meet him, and those who do will be especially pleased with his manners.
A cute trick never hurts. Teach your dog to shake hands with people that he meets by holding your fist up to his nose. When he lifts his paw, even a little, praise him and give him a treat. Practice this until he can give up his paw on command. Then have him practice with different people so he is an expert. Read more

15 Essential E-Mail Etiquette Tips
E-mail is one of the most efficient ways of staying in touch with customers, coworkers and clients. It’s faster than sending a letter, less intrusive than a phone call, less hassle than a fax, and often more convenient for the recipient. Because of these benefits, it has become pervasive in our corporate culture. Here are 15 essential e-mail etiquette tips that can be found in my book, Business Class.
1. Use the subject line to inform. An e-mail’s importance is often determined by its subject line. Keep the subject line brief, specific, and relevant or else the receiver might accidentally delete or mistake your e-mail for spam or an unsolicited advertisement. Read more
