Brian and I took Oliver, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, to a special ceremony called the Blessing of the Animals at The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach today. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.
A procession of animals including dogs, cats, turtles, and guinea pigs were escorted down the aisle by their owners. At the altar, each pet was sprinkled with holy water.
During the service Oliver sat next to us on the pew as we sang songs and heard a brief sermon by Rector James Harlan about how important animals are in our lives.
Oliver is doing much better since we took him to his cardiologist a couple of weeks ago. She increased his medication (he now takes 16 pills a day) and prescribed oxygen for him whenever he gets winded. We know our time with him is limited so the blessing he received today was extra special and meaningful.
