Madonna Lacks Grace and Manners After Receiving Fan’s Gift

by Jacqueline Whitmore

Choosing the right gift can be tricky, especially if you are giving something to a celebrity. An adoring fan learned the hard way that Madonna does NOT like hydrangeas after presenting her with the bouquet during the Venice Film Festival recently.

“You are my princess, thank you so much, I love you,” said the fan as he gave Madonna the flowers. Madonna, who is at the festival to promote her new film “W.E.,” accepted them with a smile and a “thank you,” but shortly after, cameras caught her making a face. And then the ultimate faux pas occurred when Madonna didn’t realize that her mic was on and she turned to her co-star and said, “I absolutely loathe hydrangeas. He obviously doesn’t know that.”

Now he does, Madonna, and so does the rest of the world. Is it so hard to accept a well-intentioned gift with a smile and leave it at that? What would you do if someone gave you a gift that you neither wanted nor liked? Should Madonna have acted more grateful and graceful? Please share your comments.

Aw, the poor fan. He obviously was a loyal follower and supporter, and was so excited to give her a gift — and look what he got for it! Yes, Madonna should have acted more graceful and grateful — for the fan who made the kind and heartfelt gesture.

Shame on Madonna! A simple “thank you, I appreciate your thoughtfulness” is adequate, even if you do not like a gift item. Celebrity and money does not make you exempt from having good manners. In fact, I think people expect even more from you if you are highly visible.

Did anyone really expect anything different from this woman? She’s never been the epitome of class, style, civility or grace. Don’t think that zebra’s stripes will change anytime soon.

Very sad. No matter how we feel about a gift, it’s truly the thought that counts. So, it’s important to be gracious and thankful even if you loathe the gift.

As a speaker, I, unfortunately, receive many “thank you” gifts (in addition to the check) that I do not want or like. But I grin and bear it, smile, thank the giver.

But once I’m on my own, I dump it. I don’t want to end up with a bunch of stuff around me that I don’t want, value, or need. I wish everyone would just give Office Depot or Staples gift certificates. They’ll always come in handy, and I can buy what I want.

I agree with you, Peggy. I would also love to receive Office Depot or Staples gift certificates. They always come in handy!
